Care & Maintenance
Natural stone is porous to varying degrees, meaning liquids — particularly acidic ones — can penetrate the surface if left unsealed. With the right routine, natural stone is one of the most durable surfaces you can install. The key is understanding your specific material.
ImportantAvoid all acidic cleaners — including vinegar, lemon juice, bleach, tile sprays, and most multipurpose household cleaners. Even diluted acid degrades the seal and can etch the surface over time.
One of the most durable natural stones — harder than marble and resistant to most acids when properly sealed. A damp microfibre cloth with warm water handles most daily cleaning. Use a pH-neutral stone cleaner for deeper cleans.
Seal before installation and reseal every 12–24 months. In kitchens, reseal annually. Use a penetrating impregnating sealer. Test with the water drop method: if water beads, the seal is intact; if it darkens and absorbs within minutes, reseal.
Dolomite sits between marble and quartzite in hardness. Use warm water and a pH-neutral cleaner. Wipe dry after cleaning to prevent watermarks on honed finishes.
Seal before installation. Reseal every 6–12 months in kitchens, annually in bathrooms. Two thin coats beat one heavy coat.
Etching vs StainingA stain is discolouration from a substance absorbed into the stone — sealing prevents this. Etching is a chemical reaction that dulls the finish — sealing alone can't prevent it. Light etching can often be restored by a professional stone polisher.
The most acid-sensitive common stone. Use only warm water and a purpose-made marble cleaner. Wipe up acidic spills immediately — don't let them sit even briefly.
Seal before installation. Reseal every 6 months in kitchen use; annually in bathrooms.
The most hard-wearing natural stone. Highly resistant to scratching, heat and acid. Warm water and a mild pH-neutral cleaner works for daily use.
Seal before installation. Many granites need resealing every 3–5 years only.
Sealer RecommendationWe recommend Lithofin, Aqua Mix or similar professional-grade penetrating stone sealers. Ask us at the showroom for our current recommendation — it varies by stone type.
